NATURE'S BAROQUES

Since importing Sovina, a 1999 d' Andrade bred Iberian Sorraia stallion to Oregon, USA from Germany/Portugal, becoming the first Sorraia breed on USA soil. The name Nature's Baroques was thought of; to represent the Baroque horse breeds; the Andalusian, Lusitano, Friesian and Lipizzan which all trace their heritage to the Sorraia horse breed.

It was a dream of Erin Gray since the age of 15 years old, to own the rarest of the Iberian horse breed. This dream came true 18 years later at the age of 33 during the year of 2000, that a Portugal imported Iberian Sorraia stallion was purchased and imported to the USA! Sovina was born in Portugal on Jose Luis Sommer d' Andrade's estate, and was later imported to Germany with his dam after German horseman Hardy Oekle purchased him during the purchase of the dam; as a yearling he was imported to the USA!.

To this day there are only two Sorraias in the USA, both of them full brothers, a year apart of age. Sovina's younger brother, Tejo II; a German imported Sorraia, foaled in Germany, bred by Hardy Oekle as recorded in the Portuguese Studbook.

UPDATE! As of November 4, 2006, a Portugal imported Sorraia mare, Vaiada bred/owned by Jose d, Andrade has been imported to Brazil becoming the first Sorraia breed on Brazil soil! Proud owner is Brazilian Lusitano horse breeder; Fernando Prado Ferreira of Sao Paulo, Brazil. On February 22, 2007, a Sorraia colt, named Cabral V.P. out of Vaiada became the first Sorraia breed born in Brazil and the America continent!

Also during the Summer of 2006, a German imported Sorraia yearling colt, Altamiro; born at the Wisentgehege, Bison Preserve, a zoological park in Springe, Germany; was imported to Canada from Germany becoming the first Sorraia breed living in Canada!

Nature's Baroques and Portugal's Sorraia breeders does not acknowledge the 'Sorraia Mustangs', because the so called 'American Sorraias/Sorraia Mustangs' ( are dun/grulla coloured Mustangs from any herd/registry ) and the true Iberian Sorraias are NOT the same breed .Many horse breeds have Iberian ancestry/Sorraia mtDNA such as the Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse, Connemara Pony, Morgan, Percheron and the Welsh Cob.

The Sorraias in Portugal are now being preserved and protected in Portugal's Sorraia Horse Natural Reserve
